Thanks for joining ladies! Smile

Challenge will be ongoing starting Monday, April 5th and we'll check in 1or 2x's a week with tips, progress, what products we're using, styles etc.

My daughter is tex-laxed. She is 12 and her hair is fine but has a kinky, wavy, curly texture that wasn’t manageable until I loosened it with relaxer.

Hair goal is to have healthy thicker hair – waist length by end of summer. It’s currently mid-back.

Is that reasonable?

She takes Flinstones J so her multivitamin is covered.

I flat ironed my daughter’s hair last week so I won’t put any direct heat on it again until  May/June for a graduation.

I purchased jojoba oil and Fantasia PM oil.

I will wash with Cream of Nature 1x every 2 weeks or 1x per week as needed

Deep condition with OSR

Clarify 1x month

Protein treatment 1x month.

No trimming until I flat iron again in June.

Hair milk to moisturize

Gel on edges

Wide tooth comb

Brush

Simple styles – 1  or 2 ponytails

Braid outs (she really likes those)

Bantu knots to get it straight

Bonnet nightly (THIS is the hard part!!!) with the Fantasia PM oil applied.

I will try to find a ruler and measure her hair so I can have an accurate length to base growth on.

P.S. I know a lot of ladies with good lenght don't shampoo their hair so I might consider going this route as well.. I still need to research though.

Hi! This sounds great! My daughter just turned 12 today and I haven't been on here in a while but decided that I needed to do some research since her hair growth has stalled. She has the exact same type of hair as your daughter's but not as long (shoulder length) because I messed it up some years ago trying to tame it :(
What type of texlax do you use? I've tried having her's braided but that doesn't seem to help it grow either. We wash 1x per week or bi-weekly depending on the need also. But with her running track now, I know it will be at least once a week. She likes to wear it loose which I hate for her to do all the time but lately I have been able to convince her to bun it.
I've been thinking about trying oil on her head too. I'm assuming that I should be able to find the jojoba oil at the beauty supply.
Any advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I guess I should say that I am willing to join the challenge. Thanks!

What type of texlax do you use?

I buy a kid brand  & leave it on very briefly - 5-7 minutes. Sometimes I add conditioner to it to slow the process down but this last time it loosened it more than I prefer, but it's much more manageable and we only texlax about 2-3x's a year.

I bought the jojoba oil from trader joe's and last night I applied it to her scalp and ends, braided her hair in 3 braids with just a light spritz of setting lotion and spritz PM Fantasia oil, bonnet and this morning her hair was VERY nice! She wore it in a braid out. I was suprised at how mositurized it made my daughter's dry hair look.

Tonight I have to wash it due to spotty dandruff.

What is Jojoba Oil

jojoba-oil-for-hairThe jojoba plant produces jojoba oil.  This plant can be found in Mexico, California and Arizona.  As you can see this plant grows in the dessert and produces a wonderful gold-colored, thick oil that is used for all kinds of health and beauty treatments.

It is also an oil that is non-greasy.  It is very similar to serum in this way.  It will also not leave you with any type of odor at all.

You will commonly find jojoba oil in hair products.  If you don’t, then look for it in the ingredients list.  Using products with jojoba oil as well as pure jojoba oil as a hair treatment will give your hair shine, health, beauty, and length.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Hair

Jojoba oil is good for all types of hair especially hair that is dry or damaged, has split ends and is prone to breakage and tangling.  Jojoba is considered a moisturizing  oil since its molecules are small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle.  Jojoba oil is also the oil that is considered to be most like natural hair oil or sebum that’s produced by the sebaceous glands.

Jojoba oil also works well on the scalp and keeps it from being dry.  This is a great oil to treat dandruff, dry scalp, and psoriasis on the scalp.  It also promotes a healthy scalp with its antibacterial properties.

Jojoba oil helps keep the hair moisturized so that it doesn’t break and can retain length.

Jojoba Oil Hair Treatment

There are too many jojoba oil for hair uses to count!  First, jojoba oil works great as a serum by adding shine and helping with dryness.  You can apply a tiny bit after you’ve applied your leave-in conditioner to seal in the moisture. You can also apply it to  dry hair either all over for shine or simply to ends for dryness.  Jojoba oil will work similarly to a serum by smoothing the hair cuticle which can hide the appearance and improve dry, frizzy or dull-looking hair.

Second, it works great  for hot oil treatments.  It is known that doing a hot oil treatment every two months can beneficial to your hair.

Here's an easy recipe for a jojoba hot oil treatment:

  1. You’ll first want to warn up the bottle of jojoba oil.
  2. After warming, apply the jojoba oil all over your hair and cover with a plastic cap.  (Don't forget to massage into your scalp also!)
  3. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then rinse and shampoo as usual.

Finally, just like many other oils, you can use jojoba oil for hair by adding it to your conditioner to make it more moisturizing and emollient.  Simply add a teaspoon to your conditioner and apply it to your hair.  Let it sit and then rinse.  Do not re-shampoo your hair!  This works especially well for African-American hair or kinky, and curly hair textures. Now that you know about the many uses of jojoba oil, let's find out where you can buy some.

Buy Pure Jojoba Oil

You can purchase jojoba oil all over the place!  You can be sure to find it at health food stores and it is even becoming more common to find it at drugstores.  You’ll be better off buying it in a health food store or online so that you can buy 100% jojoba oil.  Otherwise, you can’t be sure if other ingredients have been added or not.  Jojoba oil can be on the pricey side depending on where you purchase it so be careful if you notice it at an extremely cheap price because it probably isn’t authentic or rather organic.  Also pay attention to whether it is 100% pure jojoba oil or if something has been added; a popular ingredient to add is vitamin E.  A popular brand of organic jojoba oil is Dessert essence.
