Ok so here's my dilemma, I have a dream of becoming a hairstylist, but I'm worried about income, I am a single mother I am 31 and I have one semester from finishing a degree in healthcare administration, I recently changed my major (and schools) to economics b/c I wanted a major that is more specific in nature (healthcare administration is kind of broad), anyway my problem, is that I keep going back to hair I use to style hair for extra income in my home (and even when I was in the military) I have a talent but I know I could be so much better..I know beauty school is expensive but I have a year left of MGIB so tuition and rent would be paid for ( I was thinking paul micthell)...my plan is to relocate to NY (brooklyn) or PA (philadelphia) go to beauty school, work as a hairstylist for a year and then use my VA loan to buy a small shop and open my own shop and years later another one I want to specialize in natural hair and weaves with an emphasis on healthy hair. I've already started a business plan and feel confident that I can pull in customers through networking and marketing myself...I'm just seriously scared...I am a single mother with no money put into savings ( I would have enough for the initial move) and I have no support from family and friends on this (besides my younger sister who feels I should just go for it) everyone else looks at me and thinks I should be a nurse, lawyer, hospital administrator...and I want to style hair...I just dont know about leaving school to pursue my dream, I need unbiased opinions...so what do you think?!?

Well I wrote a long(er) reply to this thread but I accidentally closed the window and it all erased!

I went to the Paul Mitchel NYC Staten Island website and looked up prices. Estimated out of pocket prices are $14,600 for tuition/fees and another $3,261 for books/supplies (PaulM Net Price Calculator link---> http://nyc.paulmitchell.edu/staten-island-ny/programs/netprice?progid=28 ). You said your MGIB will cover that so you'll be set, ain't gotta worry about that.

I have a few questions for you: Big smile

-When you say you're worried about income do you mean how much you'll make after you get your license/degree or how much you'll make from your job while progressing towards your license/degree?

-I'm not familiar with the ins&outs of MGIB, so I wanted to know if it also covers the cost of transportation, groceries, childcare or non-school related things?

-And if not, will the money you have for your initial move be enough to cover those and other purchases for a few weeks/months until you get back on your feet?

-Do you have to go out of state for COS school? I saw online that there were 4 Paul M schools in Illinois (not to be a creeper, LoL it says Illinois under your avi). If one of those are close to you, maybe you can start at one of those, go there part-time for a few months and get a part-time job or continue doing hair as a side hustle until you have enough money to cover whatever your MGIB/VA doesn't cover. Maybe even put your initial-move$ and that extra money you make into your savings. After a few months you can transfer to the one in NYC (didn't see any PaulM schools in Philly) and get your liscense. I'm only talking about money/prices because you said you were a single mother with no money to put into savings.

My "unbiased" opinion: But maybe my opinion is biased bc I'm always for people going for their dreams. You can definitely make this happen! It's never too late to follow your dreams! & You can always return to school. Your credits are not going anywheresss! [[But if you're only one semester away from finishing it up anyway, why not just finish strong? Get your degree since its sooo close. And then after that start up at COS school?]] I say get your COS license, even if you don't end up going to Paul M's school in NYC, get your license somewhere! It's something that YOU have a passion for. You don't have many supporting "cheerleaders" in your corner right now and everyone thinks you should be a healthcare worker or a lawyer, but so what? Be your own biggest motivator! If you don't have a passion for heathcare-y stuff, why even go into that field? You want the job that won't feel like a "job" and get paid for doing something you enjoy doing as a hobby? It seems like Cosmetology is that. 'long as you have your financial stuff in order as far as moving/settling in goes, DO YOU!
