Topic: Serious Loc Fever Posted: Nov 24 2011 at 1:38pm |
First time posting in here, but I've always been a lurker! Lately, I've been having some SERIOUS loc fever. Still not sure, mostly because my hair is a little on the longer side, and I've read a couple times that it's not good to start locs on longer hair because your dreads will look shabby and just really....bad.
Talk about a punch in the face.
If I do decide to loc up, I might wait until April 2012 because that will be the end of my 3rd year of being natural and it would be cool to start my 4th year as my 1st year of loc'ing.
This is a picture of my length in twists so far:

I would like to start them with a smaller size though. Not sister locs small but...small. And I just wanna know would starting to loc my hair around this length give me shabby looking dreads? Has anyone here started loc'in up around my length?
TIA!

First and foremost congratulations sis!
Nope not at that length .I would be in 2 months if I didn't end my challenge lol
I would go a tad smaller in size. Then again you can always resize, split, and or even keep it the size it is. Remember your locs will grow larger in size in terms of width. That is why most start off the size of a pencil, pinky, and or index finger. You have options if your locs are to small you can combine.

Hey Mskraizy
I started my locs about 6 weeks ago and my hair is pretty long. They don't look shabby (yet, crosses fingers :D) They just look like lose curls, but I love them, my loctician loves starting locs on longer hair b/c he says it takes a shorter time to loc, he's been doing this for 30 + years and his other clients have wonderful locs, I'm always gawking at them when I'm in his chair, lol, anyway if your sure you want locs, I say go for it, the "shabby" look will come and go b/c locs go through stages but I'm sure your mature locs will look wonderful!

There used to be a member on here-I think her name is NigerianQeen. She started her locks with BSL hair or possibly longer. They were gorgeous! I haven't seen her here in a while, but have seen her on Nappturality.

| Do you mean it's not possible to get good locs at this length?
And I wasn't planning on loc'in in THESE twists. I was just trying to show my length. I don't plan to officially start loc'in (if I do) until April next year. But thank you. If you've ever seen prettypoision, I absolutely ADORE her size, but I want mine a teensy bit thicker. =>

| Oh really now? I did this "test thing" with those twists in the pictures and tried retwisting the roots after I washed them and only kept them in for like an extra 2 or 3 days, and one twists was so hard to take down. I've never had my hair matt before (but then again I never wash a set of twists either) so I feel it wouldn't take my hair that long to loc up.
Cool.

No you can achieve it at that length. I can't relate I'm not at that length. Sorry for the mishap. Nigerianqueen I have some of her information from her fotki in my loc book. Yes I made a loc notebook a sister has to be prepared
