Topic: Regimen for Box Braids. Posted: Nov 18 2011 at 11:08pm |
Hi guys, I am relaxed but challenginf myself to go a year wearing box braids.
In my normal regimen I do tea rinses 2x a week for shedding. Would I be able to continue doing this with braids?
Also when I DC with braids, should I condition the entire length of the braid or just my scalp??
TIA!!!

I wore box braids for a year and was able to do tea rinses with success. You have to rinse more

I wear braids at least 6 months out of the year. I never deep condition my hair while in braids. To me that is a waist of money. Also you risk getting product buildup in your braids. Before I braid my hair, I do a protein treatment to coat my strands and keep them from breaking while in the braids. After I wash my scalp and braids and rinse really well. I apply a light conditioning spray to each braid, being careful to coat each braid as far down as my real hair goes in the braid. I shampoo twice a week while in braids. Note: but I wear synthetic hair, I would not wash human hair as frequently, but I would do scalp cleanses instead) HHJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*While im in braids, I wash then DC my hair once a week n sit under my steamer. I Dont do anything different than i would normally do if my hair was out.on a daily basis i would use a water sprtiz mixed with evoo, coconut oil, carrot oil, t-tree oil. n spray my hair from roots to where my hair ends.

Have any of you had bad experience, i did once but i am currently in braids again but only for 3 weeks during my exam period, do you think the risk of damage is great? i rlly rlly just want to grow my hair back without any set backs, i mist my scalp with water in the morning and the ends lightly then apply a braids spray, i intend to wash once a week and DC under the dryer as well..im scared my hair will brk off & thin..but i guess i need to chill..

when i removed them my hair was very broken up hence thin looking and well i got that crap cut off asap, which was the reverse of what i wanted to do at the time, then i was only using braids spray..
hopefully with the addition of DC and applying castor oil to the scalp it helps and this time im using a much larger braid and i believe the last time i had them longer than 3 wks but under 3 months.
PS: I watched a vid and the girl did not apply conditioner to the roots just the length of the braid so that should prevent build up.
Veemack: how has the braiding treated your hair?
a gf of mine recently took hers out and she says her hair has thinned down to nothing..

Wow sorry to hear that! Braids should grow your hair and not take it out. As for myself, I have been wearing braids off and on for at least 6 months out of each year. And they have been a hair saver for me. But I have been doing extensions for 20 years, so I know lots of helpful tips.
Somethings to be aware of with getting braids. If your hair is relaxed or color treated in anyway, there is a good possibility that the extension and lack of moisture getting into your real hair, will thin your hair out. Because no matter how much you spray your hair, the extension is still covering your hair, so it will only get a small amount of the product on the hair. So if you hair is relaxed or weak in anyway, before you get it braided, apply a protein treatment such as Aphogee 2 step onto your hair. The protein will give your hair extra strength while its braided up. And it will be less likely to break. As you braid your hair apply shea butter to each section. This will coat the hair and give it some moisture and nourishment while in the extensions. Remember if your extensions are red in color, the dyes on the hair will dry your natural hair out. Never keep your extensions in longer than 8 weeks. If you are trying to achieve healthy hair. This part is hard for me, because my braids still look good after 3 months and will last up to 4 months. But just because it still looks good, does not mean you keep them in to get your monies worth, lol. While your hair is braided, wash no less than once per week. And continue to use the braid spray. I also find that doing the GHE treatment while your hair is braided helps to keep it moisturized. Edges should be touched up afer 4 weeks, if they is any new growth at all. And we all know not to braid the hair is to small sections, especially around the edges. Follow these steps your hair will grow and thrive while it is braided.

Thanks for the tips Veemack, well the week before the installement i did a protein treatment and the night before installment i did a deep condition, here is to hoping in 3 weeks all is still well, im not looking for anything grt in terms of growth i just wanted something low maintenance during those weeks as i will be very busy..
I probably wont fool around braids much in the future though because it seems like its a hit or miss for some folk, and i dont want to risk it :)
