Topic: My Natural Hair Length Check & Are You Retaining Posted: Feb 10 2012 at 2:52pm |
Hey all! So I recently did a length check to start off the new year. Although I retained length I am finding myself re-evaluating my hair regimen and handling tecniques because I didnt retain ALL of my length. I feel as if a part of me is being unrealistic but I dont know. My biggest idol especially when it comes to natural hair is kimmaytube (from youtube) and when she used to post her hair updates and length checks it always looked as if she retained the full 1/2 inch a month. Some of the things I have taken into consideration as far as why I may not be retaining all of my length is my constant use of tiny mini twists as a protective style and (my all time favorite) braids as a protective style. Both styles are good protective/ low manipulation hair styles because they keep my hair in some ways tucked away (more so with braids then twists). The reason I am skeptical about them however is because of the process needed to put them in and take them out. Perhaps when I am taking out and putting in my braids/twists I am doing some damage to my hair. I try to be gentle, but when you have been taking braids out for hours in a day in someways the whole "gentle act" gets thrown out the window (clearly thats my bad though lol-- PATIENCE CHILD!). Well anyways here the question: Are you retaining all of your length? If so how? Also if any of you would like to see my length check the link will follow, I am almost at MBL just under bra strap length:

I know!! Im trying to get back into the swing of things with my youtube and my hair forums ... SOOO much has been going on to where I cant really engage in the things I enjoy the most (BOO) anyways when I take out my braids and twists I dont really lose a lot of hair, however I was reading kimmaytubes tweets and she had mentioned that when you do small/tiny twists or braids your hair is more prone to breakage.. I suppose that it never occured to me that the very process of putting in and taking out tiny twists or braids would cause my hair to break... Since going natural I have been keeping track of the amount of hair I lose with every detangle session (even the hair that comes out during the process of me taking my braids and twists out) and everything has been consistant (ie same amount of shed hair depending on the amount of time the style was kept in) But I cant deny that I dont spot those small pieces of hair that actually are broken strands... and im thinking maybe if i did giant twists those broken pieces i spot sometimes wouldnt exist.... Sometimes with my smaller twists the ends of my hair will knot up which will cause me to have to cut or the ends will tangle... It isnt drastic because I still retained length but its still something I would like to change/eliminate

i think you are growing well! and at your own pace. i use mini twists as a ps and i believe that i have retained a lot of growth with them. kimmaytube saying they make your hair prone to breakage must be talking about when they are done improperly or removed impatiently...which applies to any style, not just mini twists. and really, kimmaytube is just a woman who grew her hair long, like many youtubers do. i think that is great, but she doesn't know everything about everyone else's hair so remember to keep doing what is working for you.
and i thought pamera was your nat hair idol? :-)

I hope I am? lol. I only really notice retention when I compare the length of my twists to past pics. Great retention Jazzy!
