Topic: I'm Not Black I'm... Posted: Feb 21 2012 at 11:55am |
Why do SOME black people and I've seen this countless times. It's usually the ones who look most obviously black say "I'm not black Im [Caribbean,Jamaican, Belizean, Nigerian etc]" Like isn't Black a race? Why do we put a nationality before being Black as if that's supposed to separate you from the rest of us but you were born here?
Correct if I'm wrong but I was just wondering.
Oh and my friends status on FB inspired this post:
Well...ACTUALLY! I'm not black.people forget,I look "different" for a reason. I'm NIGERIAN and CARRIBEAN. and if YOU don't like it...OH-*&%^$#@EIN-WELL. Like my mama say in her native toung "chino qwe bico qwano!" Lmao!

How do you have the nerve to tell someone what they should identify themselves as simply because you simplistically see them as you see yourself?

Because we're all Black, I mean you were born in America and we're American first but everyone looks at all of the same as . I don't mean that you can't claim you're culture but denying the fact that you're black doesnt make any sense. My brother is half Jamaican and AA but I he's not mixed culturally or otherwise he's gonna grow up to be a black man plain and simple. But thats just my take on it...

For those that have deep family roots and traditions tied to their homeland I don't see the problem. I actually encourage it. Black is usually synonymous with US, so if my parents are Kenyan, from Kenya I would probably say i'm Kenyan. I personally have no idea where my family is from so I just self identify as black.
While some don't want to be lumped in with black americans for obvious true and stereotyped reasons I don't necessarily see it as divisive all the time.

Their society is different. In a country like Nigeria or Jamaica, most people are black so they don't really gotta identify their race. They see themselves by their nationality. In America, we weren't considered citizens for so long that we took our race first and foremost as an identity. But I understand what u mean and some people do try to separate themselves from American blacks.
