So for the 2nd time since ive been natural (sept 09) i straightening my hair. I washed, blowed dry and braided until today where i flat ironed.
i put in head protectant for every section a quarter size for my WHOLE head of almond oil and hibiscus cream (shea moisture) and thats it!

my hair is straight but its no where near silky or flowy, its almost just like i blowed it out real well.
what am i doing wrong? what should i do next time? did i use the wrong protectant?
my heat protectant is fantasia ic (pink)
i think before when i tried beyond the zone i got similar results.

or im thinking its because my hair isnt heat trained. at this point i feel like i look better with straight hair and i wont have to spend as much time with straight hair but i will NOT relax. ill be a straightening natural

ETA: i have the GVP and the head setting was in between 410 and whatever the 300 temp is. (like 360-380)

i want it to look like this :) @ 6 mins

The first problem is that your flat iron is not hot enough.  I prefer 450 degrees and have diminished results at 430 and under sometimes.  Also make sure you are blowdrying down the shaft and getting the dryer (with a concentrator attachment preferably- the ones the cover the end of the dryer and form just a slat that the air comes out).  I also like using dryers with a cool shot at the end to smooth the cuticle down even more.

Product wise- I love Moroccan Oil/ Argan Oil.  That stuff makes my hair so soft and silky.  I spray some on my wet hair and then also use it very lightly before I flat iron.  Another product that has been around awhile that I have started using again (since it just won again as stylist choice for smoothing serum) is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny.  Try a little of that too.  I really think though your main problem is the heat of the flat iron.

I think some of it depends on the texture of your hair.  I also find that you may have to do it a couple times but the main thing that made the difference for me was the FLAT IRON.  I got a really nice ceramic tourmaline and that along with the Hair Rules blow out cream, BioSilk heat protectant, and Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum made a world of difference.  I also use a tension comb when I flat iron.  I blow through my hair with the comb attachment very briefly on the warm or cool setting and then put in a pony until it's fully dry.

Unless you have very thick and coarse hair, you may not need a high temp setting but maybe smaller sections and a good technique.

IA with using a higher heat setting, take your time and do smaller sections, use a good heat protectant and moisturizer. serums are really good too

Maybe it's the oil you put in your hair...that can give the tendency to weigh it down and loose the natural free flowing moving extremely clean hair gives.

i agree with this, some hair is not meant to be suuuuper bouncy..the coils and kinky texture in african american hair do not allow for hair to pass through

I agree with the other members especially using smaller sections and using the comb thru method. Check YouTube there are so many out there, maybe you can find one that you really like. Here's 2 maybe they will help: Nappturallyblessed & eSalonSpace.  TTYL
