thanks guys. I was having a hair crisis yesterday. I may stay natural for a lil while longer, but summertime will be the test. I wore my hair in an afro today with a scarf. It actually looked cute but I had to do some modifying. I had to pin the back up under the scarf because my textures werent matching. Does anyone have multiple textures throughout their head? that's another thing that makes styling difficult because what I look like with an afro up top and it hanging down on the bottom?? Grrr hair!! |
Glad to hear your hair crisis has been adverted for now. I think MOST of us have multiple textures in our heads. Mine sounds like the reverse of yours though tighter in the back and looser in the front. I'm still learning to just embrace it, because fighting it just doesn't work. To encourage yourself I'd suggest you take pictures when you are having a good hair day, even if you don't post them take em for yourself for the days when you have bad hair days.

I feel the same way..I just don't know what to do with it. It is always dry and there aren't any styles I can do that I like.
I find that the only time I like wearing my hair is when I blow it out and straighten it. :-\ I don't think I will perm my hair because I like my growth, but it's so tempting. I might perm it when it gets very long.
I think being natural is easier dependent on what hairtype you have

Idk, I think some of the Type-C and looser-curl-patterned ladies would disagree with you on that. Dryness, breakage, split ends, bad hair days under hat/scarf are set backs that affect all types of hair. Once you find your own trick to dealing with those setbacks is what will make dealing with your own hair type easier. Try two strand twists. I haven't been wanting to style my hair at all so that's what I've been doing. It's been almost a year since I've worn a braid/twist-out and boy I miss those! Have you tried deep conditioning to help restore some moisture?...There are plenty of cute hair styles in the HOTD thread. Teach yourself how to do some of those styles. Youtube has a ton of simple hairstyle tutorials for all lengths of hair.

I've been natural for 4 + years and I've had my weak moments, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. I cut my hair off several times because I got frustrated but now I just deal with it. I wig, braid, and weave my hair anytime I get tired of it but I don't think I'd ever relax again cause I always want the option of wearing my fro or twist out. I'm enjoying the many options I have. If you know you will not miss your fro at all, I say go for it.

OP I totally understand your frustration. There are so many factors to why we go natural and why we don't won't to bother with it anymore. I've been natural for over six years now and I still feel like I get tired of all the work that goes into my hair. It's a beast that I've learned how to work with as far as no longer being overwhelmed with my hair. BUT.. I still don't feel as though I know how to style my hair the way that I would like. Or for example when I do twist out it looks great but then my problem becomes how do I maintain the style throughout the week. I totally understand what you mean about liking length. For me I just don't look right with shorter styles because of my face shape. But anyway, my hope is to encourage you that we all go through these times of doubt and just being unsatisfied. But I agree with trying different wigs or weaves, or even just watching and looking at natural hair tutorials for inspiration and tips. I'm really thankful that the ladies here seem to be okay with just doing with your hair what you like but keeping in mind health too. I used to go on a board where wearing a straight style was of the devil according to some. And I well I can't get with that either.

I think you should consider heat training your hair. To me, this is the best of both worlds. My kinks are looser and I can have the "relaxed look" anytime I want and I have the thickness that relaxed hair will never have! I am also a length whore. I transitioned for more than 2 years so I would never have to be bald or do the BC. Think about it before going back to the creamy crack.

I had a "hair crises" last week and ended up cutting off a lot of hair and then re-evaluating my natural hair game plan. Thankfully I am at a place where its finally "just hair".. and I did not get upset about losing length. It happens to every natural at some point..(the frustration). You are not alone. One thing I can honestly say, is that I have never considered going back to relaxing. What makes me never consider the thought of going back to the creamy crack is remembering why I went natural in the first place. PLUS I notice that most people who end up relaxing (for what ever reason).. end up transitioning all over again or making their big chop #12345.. No thanks. Good luck to you!

Do you girl! nothing wrong with how you feel. I did the bantu knot thing too, i jst loved the look, my mum, sis, hated it, some dudes liked, my friend i knew just said u have to stand tall n do u. If u feel like sliding just do a weave for a while, i get v. bored sometimes, n frustrated wen u don't get that polished look. I had a weave in may n last summer decided to learn how to deal with my hair , spent about 6 months playing wid it, but i had time to, if u have to go to school/ work etc, it may not be practical for you. I was meant to re weave it but a cousin of mine came round and taught me a few things. If you have no support around you, no salon, its horrible to have no one. Try if poss and find some natural hair events or something, if you WANT to, if not get your weave on, i would avoid relaxing unless your sure, my cuz relaxed hers and wanted her hair back, but its up to YOU! I was at the annoying in between stage where its too short n not long enough , sometimes you jst have to ride it out.

I was going to suggest this as well. I've been wearing my hair flat ironed (on air dried hair) the past couple of wks and I'm actually alot more content with my results. If I don't flat iron I'd blow dry on a medium setting and do a braidout.

I admire you for trying and admitting that working with and wearing your hair is not working out for you. This was supposed to be freeing right? What it has come down to is extra stress and work that you did not want nor need. Some people won't be happy until everyone one of us is nappy. Nappy for nappy's sake is defeating the whole purpose of going natural. Stop the stressing. I did this with nursing once. I was so stressed out trying to nurse my first born that it was more about me succeeding at nursing then my baby's nutrition! The doctor finally said, "Stop!" If this has got you this wound up, then just give him a bottle! Was I any less of a mother because I gave my son a bottle ? No. Natural is not for everyone. Trust me you will still be Black (and happy) in the morning.
