Topic: Does flatironing permanently alter natural hair? Posted: May 28 2011 at 11:08am |
My question is Does flatironing permanently alter natural hair if flat ironed daily?
I ask because recently I did a big chop, and while I'm waiting on my hair to get to a length I am comfortable managing I've been wearing sew-in weaves. I've been leaving a small horseshoe out in the front and I flat iron that portion typically every day, or at least every other day.
After recently shampooing my weave, I've noticed that small horseshoe is rather straight compared to it's natural texture. My natural hair is tightly curled, and when I shampooed my hair, the horseshoe was loosely waved. With that being said, maybe my question should be, Will my hair eventually revert back to its natural state?

it can if done incorrectly.
are you using heat protectant? are you flat ironing at the lowest temp
that will get your hair straight? are you only doing one or two passes?
did you prepare your hair properly?
if part of your hair won't revert, try deep conditioning a few times.
sometimes your hair will revert back. if it's permanently damaged,
there's nothing you can do about it. it'll be just like the permed ends
you already cut off.

Yes, I use a heat protectant. It's a straightening serum and heat protectant in one. It's by Smooth 'N Shine. Then I'll spray Sally Beauty's Beyond the Zone heat protectant spray on top of the serum.
I flat iron on the highest temp and only do one pass. Orginally, I would have the temp set on 300-350, but because my hair is so thick I found myself doing about 5 or 6 passes. So, I upped the temp to 450 and I only do one pass.

Temperatures above 400F are very dangerous to natural hair. One pass of the full 450F can lead to hair that will never revert back, especially as you are doing this everyday. Two things that lead to damage are high heat and frequent use of heat.
but as niki said try deep conditioning a few times to get it to revert back as it's possible

It can change your hair permanently. I did that about two years ago and my horseshoe plus sides are stick straight. It looks like I'm transistioning but I'm fully natural. Try rollersetting your hair so you would use less heat plus up your protein and moisture treatments to see if it will bring your curl back.

Thanks ladies! I will take your advice and let you know the outcome in the next few weeks. I'm just hoping I haven't damaged that section of my hair

If your hair is not reverting back to its natural state obviously its a sign of damage. You will need to stop putting so much heat on your hair or trim it. I too experienced this same problem so I literally stopped flat ironing my hair for a month. However, i did get my hair professionally done by my hair stylist/friend but she deep conditions it with this eucalyptus conditioner before she presses it

I know how you feel. My leave out is basically 3b curls now where it used to be 3c. The tip top of my hair has looser curls anyway and flatironing has not help yet I can't step away from that darn flat iron! So I have 3b, 3c, 4a, and maybe even a smidge of 4b all on one big head!
