SO, I've been natural for a year and almost two months, and in the past two months I've been getting CRAZY split ends!! I had bad SSKS, so I guess they turned into split ends...I usually have my hair in twists, and I did flat iron my hair to elongate my twists for my birthday in November...then after that, I had my hair out more often in twist outs and braid outs, then went back to twists.

I dusted my ends a month ago, and from then on, I;' been doing search and destroys....in the meantime, my strands look thinner, and are getting gaps in between some of them :(
Do I need to add more protien? My hair feels dryer as well....So what way can I add more protien without buying that aphogee two minute reconstructer? I'm broke right now.... if it helps, I have low porosity hair.

This may (or not) work for you. As far as cheap protein treatments go, I've hear something about the protein in raw eggs and people use it on their hair. You'd have to research it though bc I have no personal history with it, or google homemade protein treatments for something less yucky. Check out the hair breakage subsection too (traffic seems to be steady down there) there should be a ton of info on keeping yours ends protected so that they don't split.

I have had the same problem for years. I really hate it. It seems nothing I try works. I cut, they come back. I get new scissors, I cut, they come back. I do protein tx, they come back. I moisturize, they come back.

^^ Agreed at tropical-bunch , I've only recently come on my hair journey (feb2011) and I cut, I use moisture and protein and they come back. It's nothing to do with heat( as I don't use hardly any heat) so maybe it's way i'm handling my hair. Anyways hoping someone will chime in sometime.

For some naturals our hair is just too delicate and soft. Just pay attn to your hair on a weekly basis. Good luck! Have you tried the Green House Effect (GHE) for your hair/

do you use a comb or brush (with seams) in your hair regularly?  to detangle or style, for example?

i took impeccable care of my hair and nearly always had it in ps's. i also never used heat and only used wide-tooth combs.  so, imagine my quelle surprise when i saw splits at the ends of my hair strands and even in the strands themselves. i couldn't believe it.  i tried to pin point the culprit, but to no avail...i had everything going for me -- moisture/protein balance, good products, no brushes, no heat, etc...and still i got splits and mid-strand splits.

"why me?!" i cried.  why me!?

and then i looked at my comb and those jagged seams jutting out of each "tooth" of the comb...and back at my fragile strands...and then back at the comb...and finally made the connection - it had to be the comb. i got a seamless comb the next week and my mid-strand splits disappeared...

i still get split ends (we all do), but definitely not to the point where i am worried or concerned.

so, if you use a comb (wide tooth or not), brush, or otherwise that has seams, i would recommend dropping that zero and getting with a hero (a seamless comb, that is)!  :-)
Beautiful Hair is by design.

I loved reading Heavy's story! "Why me?!" It spoke to the people.Big smile I kicked my Denman to the curb last year for my TangleTeaser and I, too, have been noticing splits since. I've read bad reports about the TT due to breakage/splits, maybe it's time to rebound back...glad I didn't throw it away, I don't see it sold in Sally's anymore...

I have solved a few of my hair issues over the years, but splits is one that I can't lick.  That and the fact that my hair is so fragile it's sickening.  I don't think they are as bad as they used to be, but I never straighten and I have the feeling that would tell a scary tale.
